The man I still refer to as “my favorite Republican,” now former Newstalk 550 KFYI morning show host Bruce Jacobs has left his post at the station.
As most of you know, I was employed at Clear Channel Radio in Phoenix for about seven months in 2007. While I was attending Arizona State University, I got an internship there and was subsequently hired on as a reporter and blogger for Xtra Sports 910. I would have never been hired, however, if it weren’t for Bruce. He is the one who gave an unexpected endorsement to the Clear Channel big-wigs on my behalf. It was hard not to respect him because he would always say exactly what was on his mind, about anybody, at any given moment (including Clear Channel management and dead cops’ wives).
If I had to take a guess, I’d say Bruce and I disagreed on about 50 percent of all issues (Barry Bonds and Michael Vick being the primary ones), but agreed on the other, more important half, especially tougher immigration enforcement sans the tactics of thug Joe Arpaio. I also have to give Bruce credit for opening my eyes to the ultimate money-making deception known as “global warming.” Granted I believe there may be some sort of cyclical climate shift happening, but all “global warming” has done thus far to damage our planet is make Al Gore a worldwide celebrity.
Bruce Jacobs, to me, is the reason people only caricature those they don’t know or those they know nothing about. Before my employment with Clear Channel, I thought he was a pompous, arrogant prick on the radio. It is so much harder to view someone in a negative light that you know (which is why more “black” judges and police are needed). He’s said some thing that have made me cringe a few times, as I’m sure (ok I know) I’ve written things he thought were completely foolish and borderline “racist.” All a Republican has to do to show me they are not an inbred Confederite is simply acknowledge there are in fact Euro-Americans (millions) who go out of their way to destroy and manipulate the lives of “blacks.” When he called out Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon for screaming “racism” about Arpaio’s immigration tactics, while Gordon virtually encourages “racism” against “blacks,” that is all I needed to hear. The truth of the matter is, Republicans and “African Americans,” IDEOLOGICALLY, have a lot in common (tough immigration, pro-2nd amendment, civil unions only), but the Confederate aura around the party makes it not only a joke to a vast majority of “African Americans,” but the virtual sworn enemy.
My point is, our differences were never an issue since we always respectfully discussed them (or debated them, which was fun), as he also used to do even with “liberal” callers into his show. If I’m alive in 2010 and ultimately get married, Bruce (and director of programming, Smokey Rivers) would be high on my invite list. I would assume (though I haven’t spoken to him in over two years) Bruce is going to focus solely on his national Fox Sports show and/or maybe on his woman. Say what you want about the man, but I consider him a friend. Thanks for everything brotha and I’ll see down the road.
